The Augsburg Associates need your help.聽 If you enjoy all the coffee you can drink,聽growing friendships, feeling good about assisting clients and customers, feeling REALLY good about raising funds for Augsburg Student Scholarships, and having WAY too much fun, then you would enjoy the estate sale group.

Volunteers spend one to two weeks in preparation for a sale. The number of hours you wish to volunteer is completely up to you and your schedule. Drawers, closets, cupboards, and storage areas are emptied. All items are sorted and priced for display by an expert team who has done its research and knows its stuff. Everything is arranged for the best sale advantage.

Sales are conducted over a two-day period, typically Friday and Saturday. Again, you may volunteer around your own availability.

These volunteers are friendly, helpful, and caring. The Augsburg College Associates is a service organization with more than 100 active members.

Author Phillip Formo鈥檚 new book聽Papa: A Life Remembered聽describes the experiences of his grandfather, Andreas Helland, a Norwegian immigrant and a long-time Augsburg College professor. In the book, Formo shares memories and insights about Helland鈥檚 teaching and commitment to the Church. The book was described in a recent聽狈别飞蝉-搁别肠辞谤诲听article, which notes that proceeds from the sale of the book will go to an Augsburg student scholarship in Helland鈥檚 memory.

Senior Allison Zank 鈥�14, recipient of the Pastor George J. Knudson Memorial Scholarship award this year, delivered a homily in daily chapel two weeks ago, entitled 鈥淟etting God Speak for Himself.鈥�

Allison, a Chemistry major, shared how a scientific explanation of the expansion of the universe and how learning about the cosmological constant, a number which holds the universe in place, brought her to a new understanding of God and how he speaks to us.聽 She stated, 鈥溾��he who has flung the stars into the universe is revealing himself to us through science and in fascinating ways if we only have ears to listen.鈥�

Her experiences and path from 鈥渞eluctant atheist鈥� to her statement, 鈥淚 am a Christian,鈥� recall the conversion of her scholarship namesake, George Joakim Knudson, almost a hundred years ago.聽 George was born on a western Minnesota farm in 1903. At the age of 19, he had a spiritual awakening during a series of meetings led by the Augsburg Quartette.聽 George was confronted with the challenge of commitment to Christ and that of Christian ministry. Not able to find peace without it, he accepted this calling and worked to finance six years of higher education at Augsburg College and Seminary.聽 Pastor Knudson served God in Lutheran churches for fifty-six years.

George鈥檚 three daughters, Phyllis Seim ’58, 聽Audrey Boettcher 鈥�54, and Irma Thorpe, endowed 聽the Pastor George J. Knudson Memorial Scholarship through their financial gifts in 1998. They created this fund in honor of their father, who served on the Board of Trustees of Augsburg College and whom they remember for his faith, his positive attitude, his graciousness and humility. Over the life of this fund, twelve awards have been given, the most recent to Allison Zank 鈥�14, whose example reminds us that if we carry God inside us, he will speak through us to others.

The Augsburg Fund finished the calendar year of 2013 with great results. After a first-place finish among all Minnesota colleges and universities on Give to the Max Day, more than 1,575 donors have given over $582,540 to The Augsburg Fund. Many thanks to these generous alumni, parents and friends who have given to the College. Donor gifts to The Augsburg Fund are unrestricted, meaning they are used wherever the need is greatest; most often, these dollars are allocated toward financial aid, curriculum development, updating technology, and recruiting and retaining faculty and staff.
