Augsburg College is encouraging students to submit videos to the聽#YouAreWelcomeHere campaign.

What is it?

“The #YouAreWelcomeHere is a welcome message from U.S. higher education to international students around the world. It is a campaign designed to affirm that our institutions are diverse, friendly, safe and committed to student development. Participating institutions and organizations are communicating the message in statements, photos, videos, events and other creative expressions that feature students, faculty, and staff. The repetition of the statement, 鈥淵ou are welcome here,鈥� by a broad array of people from different backgrounds–from college presidents to football players–is powerful and demonstrates that we support internationalization across our campus communities and across the country.”

The Center for Teaching and Learning has partnered with the Center for Global Education and Experience to bring to Augsburg faculty and staff, “Speaking of Sabbaticals with Jeanine Gregoire”. Her topic will be聽鈥淚mmigration, Migration and More: 聽A yearlong journey to develop an Education semester abroad program in Mexico.鈥�

Augsburg students winning awards for January聽short term travel are:

• Winta Gebre has been awarded the Mary Witt Scholarship & the Students of Color Endowed scholarship for her program traveling to Guatemala
• Hani Mire聽has been awarded the Mary Witt Scholarship & the Students of Color Endowed scholarship for her program traveling to Guatemala
• Maly Thao聽has been awarded the Mary Witt Scholarship for her program traveling to Guatemala
• LaTiona Washington聽has been awarded the Mary Witt Scholarship for her program traveling to Nicaragua

Students from other institutions winning awards for January short term travel are:

• Michael VanBrocklin has been awarded the Yackel Religious Studies Endowed Scholarship Award for his program to Cuba in January, with the聽Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO).

The next round of will be due January 15th, 2016, for short term, customized programs at CGEE permanent sites traveling February – August 2016.

On Saturday, November 7th, Augsburg College celebrated the life and legacy of Lois Swenson, during the unveiling of a memorial gift in her honor.

A wooden, handcrafted bench now stands prominently in the atrium of the first floor in Lindell Library, inscribed with: 鈥淟ois Ann Swenson. 1935-2012. Live Simply so that others may simply live.鈥�

Lois Swenson was the very embodiment of CGEE鈥檚 philosophy that the purpose of education is to create a more just and sustainable world, and we could not be more grateful to her, and her family and friends鈥� continued support of our organization and mission.

The event had a great turnout, with multiple speakers honoring Lois, and the unveiling of the new bench! Here are a few photos below:

Join ISO (the International Student Organization) for activities around campus during November 16-20 for International Education Week! Here are some of the great activities that will be going on:

In addition to ISO events listed above, the Study Abroad & Study Away in the USA and the office for Latin@ Student Services will be co-hosting 聽a Global & Off Campus Programs info session for DACA and undocumented students interested in off-campus study.

The session will feature experiences of current students who have studied off campus as well as John Keller, executive director of the Immigrant Law Center of MN, who will provide legal advice about the risks and benefits of these programs for students. The session highlights Augsburg鈥檚 commitment to offering services and support to DACA & undocumented students. Get Ahead By Going Abroad: The Importance of being a Global Citizen in the 21st Century Workforce聽鈥� Thursday, Oct. 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel

Students often hear claims that an off-campus experience (like an internship or study abroad) is life changing, transformational, and all around good for you and your resume. But why is this? Who decided that being a global citizen is important? Stacie Berdan, a world-wide leader and expert in Global Education, will be on campus presenting on this very topic.

Stacie will focus on how going global is a mindset, why today鈥檚 workers need global skills to compete, whether at home or abroad, and the steps students can take to become a global thinker. She will tie in how international/off campus experiences can help students grow in self-awareness, which can propel them forward in their pursuit of meaningful work, and emphasize the idea that gaining global skills/mindset is an important part of college, regardless of major.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend this interactive and fun presentation.
